HISTORY of the INN
The Stay Inn building was built by Matti Luomanmaki. He was born on September 3, 1874 in Lapua, Finland. He married Hilma Rantala on June 22, 1894. On May 25, 1902 Matt arrived in New York and settled in Pennsylvania as a coal miner. Hilma arrived three years later with five of their children. Working in the mines undermined Matt's health, so in 1906 the family moved to Ely where the climate was much like their native Finland. Matt and Hilma raised nine children in this house, instilling in them their high ideals and strength of character.
On July 11, 1922 Matt and Hilma became citizens of the United States of America. Their last name was shortened to Maki. Matt worked at the Pioneer Mine until he retired at age 65.
Don Beans carefully restored the Inn to what you see today, focusing on keeping the original character and history while adding modern amenities and utilizing his woodworking skills. We're proud to welcome you to this historical treasure!
